Quick Tip of the Week

Cleaning a Drain Stopper

Remember when your house was new or when you first bought the house how fast the bathroom sinks would drain? What happened? Over time soap residue, dirt and hair have built up on the stopper and on the drainpipe, which have slowed the drain down by making it smaller.

There's an easy fix for this problem. Pull the stopper out, spray it down with some scrubbing bubbles and let it sit about 5 minutes. Spray some scrubbing bubbles down the pipe and let it sit as well.

On some stoppers you will have to unscrew the rod from the back of the drain pipe under the sink and pull it out just a little to release the stopper. After the bubbles have disappeared spray both items again and use an old toothbrush to scrub all the scum and sludge off the parts.

Now that the parts are clean rinse them with hot water, if there is any sludge left repeat the process. When finished put the stopper back in the drain and try it out. It should drain good as new.
